FAQ- Online App-based COURSES

  • HOW DOES IT WORK?

    • Teens and tweens 11-18 who join the SKILLED family online will access courses through the Skilled Institute App and have the option to be covered by The Skilled Institute Private school umbrella.

    • Lessons are taught by SKILLED curriculum creator, Legit SaraJane & instructors who have completed a Level 2 background check and SKILLED training. 

    • Teens will spend 7-20min each lesson learning the HOW and the WHY behind a new skill. Then they will be free to explore that skill, dive deeper into skills they already experienced, and practice these skills through an unschooling style where the student follows their desire for knowledge through research, experimenting through their own choices, and observing natural consequences. This is done under the supervision of parents, or self-led, within an intentionally developed proprietary framework.

  • WHAT IS THE INVESTMENT?​​

    •  App-based curriculum enrollment is $9 per teen/mo. Discounts are available for families of veterans, military, first responders, siblings, and more. Skilled Institute umbrella coverage is just $20 more per month. 

    • Payments are paid by recurring charge each month through your app store.

    • Online families are requested to complete the communication series on the parent side of the App. We make this free for 14 days!

    • Parents are expected to embrace the SKILLED learning style so they can best support their teen's growth.

All lessons are available worldwide with our APP!

  • WHAT GRADE WILL MY TEEN BE IN?

    • Rather than assigning an arbitrary grade level with an age, we look for achievements. ​

    • All teens & tweens learn alongside one another through videos produced during our LIVE lessons taught to their peers.

    • Teens will access a students-only online community, via the APP, to connect, learn together, and build meaningful relationships. This portion of the app is supervised by Skilled Instructors to maintain respect and appropriate conversation.

    • Teens who show notable growth, skill, ability, knowledge, or self-awareness on a topic will earn a raise in achievement level and be given opportunities to share their skills with other students. Typically by offering support, sharing of experience, knowledge, and friendship during the unschooling time between of each lesson. 

    • We know through experience and science that teens learn best from peer interactions. Instructors will supervise unschooling time but encourage students to bond through sharing of skills, wisdom, and friendship. 

  • HOW DO WE SCHOOL ON OTHER DAYS?

    • Students will be given expectations to meet. This means they will use their home time to practice, develop, research, and master the skills they are learning.

    • Teens will be able to access courses online through the APP 24/7. Allowing them to continue growing during vacations and holidays. All of these days count towards their 180-day state attendance requirement. {Go to hslda.com to make sure your state allows umbrella coverage. 47 states and DC do!}

    • SKILLED leadership will be available through the Parent Portal & private community via the APP to support parents in implementing this learning style at home. 

  • HOW WILL ATTENDANCE, GRADES, AND GRADUATION WORK?

    • As a Private school registered with the State of Florida, SKILLED Institute acts as what is called an Umbrella School. We manage attendance requirements (180 days per year) and all of the requirements for graduation for 48 states and DC. check HSLDA.com to confirm your state's coverage. 

    • We do not believe in "grades". Instead, we look for growth and development of knowledge in 4 categories. Teens are encouraged to fall in love with the process of learning and the ability to apply knowledge instead of using arbitrary letters to track how much information they were able to memorize for a test. 

    • Graduation can happen once a teen, 16 years or older, has completed a number of the Expectations for Education needed in all 4 areas. Teens who are graduating through The Skilled Institute will receive a transcript tracking achievements and a diploma from The Skilled Institute. Simply email hello@skilledinsitute.com with the subject GRADUATION REQUEST.

  • WHAT IS YOUR DISCIPLINE POLICY

    • The Bible calls us to discipline (disciple), not punishment. SKILLED and The SKILLED Institute founders and staff​ hold that discipline is seen as logical, connected, and natural consequence of choices made. 

    • Teens will be given the opportunity to choose their attitude, level of respect for themselves and others, motivation, and drive repeatedly throughout lessons. They will also be the ones responsible for correcting, taking responsibility for, and cleaning up any "mess" that is made through a negative choice. 

    • They will also be given encouragement, support, and achievement ranking based on making better choices as well as learning how to make better choices along the way. 

    • This means we never, ever have to be the "bad guy". We never, ever have to punish poor choices. We simply facilitate and support the teens in cleaning up any mess they may have made (emotional, physical, spiritual, relational, and social). Which teaches teens and empowers them to make better choices on their own next time. Which is amazing for feeding their need for independence and building self-confidence. Blog posts and Parenting groups will be accessible through the APP to support you in sharing this learning style at home.

    • We believe in grace upon grace and then some more grace. Students will be given gentle but firm corrections and choices on how they can clean it up. Once a situation is cleaned up. They get to start again without judgment or guilt from instructors. Instructors will facilitate and model this behavior to all students so that they can learn to be graceful with themselves and others as well.
